Amazon is rolling out AI-powered features to its Kindle ecosystem, and ironically, your phone might be the best way to use them.
The two big additions are Recaps and Ask this Book. Recaps work like “previously on” segments for TV shows — quick refreshers covering key plot points and character developments across a book series. There’s also a newer Story So Far feature that generates summaries tailored to your current position in the story without spoiling what comes next.
Ask this Book is an AI chatbot that answers questions about what you’re reading. For now, it’s only available on the US version of the iOS Kindle app. E-reader versions will get it later in 2026, and Android users should see both features by year’s end.
The catch? These AI features are only available on Kindle devices released in 2024 or later. If you’re running an older model, the software won’t push the update to you at all. To make matters worse for legacy users, Amazon recently discontinued support for its earliest Kindles — the devices still function but you can no longer import new books onto them.
The iOS app serves as a helpful workaround, giving older Kindle owners a way to sample Amazon’s latest tools before deciding whether upgrading hardware is actually worth it. The question remains whether this convenience feature is genuine customer focus or a carefully designed nudge toward a new purchase.
