Ayaneo is back with another retro handheld, and this time it’s refining what already worked. The Pocket Micro 2 takes the original Game Boy Micro concept and polishes nearly every rough edge.
The headline upgrades: a larger 3,950mAh battery, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip for noticeably better performance, a bigger D-pad, larger ABXY buttons, improved shoulder buttons, and recessed dual TMR joysicks that should handle stick drift better than the first generation. Oh, and there’s now a 3.5mm headphone jack — something the original Game Boy Micro never had.
The display is the same 3.5-inch LCD running at 960×640, which is sharp enough for retro gaming. You still get USB-C, a microSD slot, and WiFi and Bluetooth. Early bird pricing starts at $239 for the 6GB/128GB model, with the 8GB/256GB variant at $309 before prices climb to $269 and $339 respectively.
The catch? Pre-orders opened yesterday and already sold out. Ayaneo says on Discord that they’re talking to suppliers about another production run but can’t make any promises yet. Classic Ayaneo — the company has a habit of releasing limited quantities and gauging demand before committing to more.
