It’s one of those questions that keeps coming up when people dip into smart home stuff: do smart bulbs actually use more electricity than a plain LED? The short answer is yes, but the details matter more than you might think.
Both bulb types draw the same amount of power when they’re actually lighting a room. The difference is what happens when they’re off. A standard LED is off-off. A smart bulb has to stay connected to Wi-Fi or a hub, which means it draws a small amount of standby power 24/7.
A 2019 study in ScienceDirect tested 30 smart LED bulbs and found that 21 of them consumed less than 0.5 watts in standby mode — meeting Energy Star requirements. Individual models vary: TP-Link’s Tapo bulbs reportedly draw around 0.2 watts idle, while Philips Hue says its modern products stay under 0.5 watts.
Translated to your electric bill, that standby draw costs between $0.35 and $1.30 per bulb per year. Hardly a dealbreaker for most people. And the scheduling and dimming features baked into smart bulbs can actually reduce total runtime, potentially offsetting the extra standby cost entirely — especially if you’re the type who forgets to switch off lights.
There’s a bigger cost nobody talks about: the sticker price. A basic LED costs $1.50 to $4, while smart bulbs typically run $8 to $15, with some premium models pushing toward $90. The combo packs help, but it’s still a meaningful difference if you’re outfitting a whole house.
Lifespan is another factor. Traditional LEDs are rated for 20 to 40 years; smart bulbs typically come in at 15 to 25. The extra electronics inside age faster. Still, the reduced runtime from automatic scheduling probably evens things out in practice.
Bottom line: smart bulbs cost a bit more upfront and a tiny bit more in electricity, but the convenience features can actually make up for it. Just don’t go buying a $90 Hue bulb expecting it to pay for itself in energy savings.
