Wikipedia Staff in UK Push for Union Recognition

UK-based employees of the Wikimedia Foundation — the nonprofit behind Wikipedia — are formally seeking union recognition. On Wednesday, staff sent a letter to management requesting the organization voluntarily recognize their union.

The effort comes after months of internal tension. In May, WMF disbanded a team that worked closely with Wikipedia’s volunteer editors, sparking frustration among both staff and contributors. Volunteers and former employees questioned whether the move was retaliation for union organizing efforts, though WMF denied any connection.

“The WMF has undergone a period of significant change in recent months, escalating workers’ concerns over transparency, trust, and the organization’s future direction,” a press release from the Communication Workers Union read. The UK contingent is the first group within WMF to seek formal recognition.

The response from Wikipedia’s volunteer community has been swift. Over 1,100 contributors signed a petition in solidarity, some signaling they’d be willing to participate in collective action if the union calls for it. That could mean a volunteer editing strike — refusing to maintain articles except in extreme cases.

WMF has previously stated it respects staff rights to organize. Now the foundation needs to decide whether to recognize the union voluntarily or force a formal vote. The Wikimedia Foundation did not respond to requests for comment before publication.
